My brother had the same problem and found it useful to tour a few large
department stores and home interior shops for ideas. He took photos of
anything he liked with a camera phone and then sourced it somewhere
cheaper. I can only tell you about London stores but the process is the
same. Probably best to stick to naturals/neutrals and blast color into
the accessories, you can always add more colour later on but lightening
walls is a nightmare and always needs two coats. How about using retro
styled wallpaper for a feature wall, pick something lush and expensive
as you'll probably only need one roll of it. I've seen it looking great.

Definately think about storage, keep it simple, make sure you can send
it back if you don't like it, scour second hand shops, think about the
importance materials/texture and make a plan first. One final tip on big
items of furniture is get the dimensions and mark out them out with
sheets of newspaper. He did this with his dining room table and even put
a few chairs around it to test it out - the real thing looks perfect now.

Not great links but I haven't found any good design sites yet.

My favourite book on color is:

"Choosing Colours" Kevin Mc Cloud

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1903845777/qid=1117642233/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-8606429-1354804

It uses the basics of the colour wheel and it works.

Also, how about kicking it off with making a mood board?

first of all, thank you very much for all the advice and the
effort you put in these posts :)
i haven't explored those links that you put up yet but they
look like there might be some good advice/ideas in them...
unfortunately, my budget is kinda ikea-set so i was thinking
about a few more expensive things(such as a couch, table & bed)
that would be completed with some interesting and cheaper objects..
i also had some kind of stylish wallpaper in mind for my bedroom and
living room but that might be a bit of a problem as i live in croatia
and these kind of things people usually get from somewhere abroad, like
italy or germany...anyway, thanks once again for helping me!

Ikea do some really nice art, some say its disposable but disposable is
huge at the moment, my friends just got soemthing from there too, if you
see the white lilly one its the top selling picture in the UK! My vote
for cheap options would be to paint feature walls. If you can find some
vibrant/retro (I've seen it done with second hand curtains!) fabric you
could staple it over a frame and make a wall panel feature, totally your
own art! The other cool thing I saw recently was to mask off three or
five (odd number anyway) squares accross one wall where the light hits
and paint them in with PVA glue mixture, it looked fab and shiny -
haven't tried it myself though.

Do you get ebay in Croatia? I've had a look and found wallpaper in there.

The other cheap thing I've seen in Ikea is those box picture frames
which you can fill with 3d stuff, I've done one with things in it from
my wedding day, and last week did a normal wooden frame (from the 99p
shop, do you have those over there) put a brown envelope in there as
backing paper and a dried green oak leaf that my husband picked out when
we were walking - sounds crap but it looks really great. Big light
shades look good and fill space, they don't have to be expensive either,
you can get those cool clothes hanger wire spiky things with fab things
hanging off them, I love those.

Make sure you check Ikea matress and pillow sizes and compare them to
where you'd normally get your sheets and stuff.

Good luck :)
